G is for General Zaroff

Flexes hands. Sets jaw. Begins typing.

This is called a challenge for a reason, right?

G is for General Zaroff.

While I'm sure Richard Connell's short story, "The Most Dangerous Game," wasn't exactly intended for young adult audiences, it's a story we study in my middle school Literacy class. Because of it, he counts as a YA character....at least for the purposes of this post.

General Zaroff is evil. He hunts humans for sport because he likes the challenge. He is arrogant, racist, conniving, intimidating, intelligent, and witty. The best (and creepiest) part about him though is that he thinks he is civilized. He even calls himself an "affable host." His self-proclaimed charm and Connell's physical comparisons between Zaroff and the devil make him one of the most sinister characters I can think of.

Anyone remember this classic? I love this story - largely because of General Zaroff.

  3. No, I haven't read it either, but the General certainly left an impression on you, by the sounds of it!

  4. Oh I totally read that short story in middle school (eons ago). General Zaroff was such a symbolic figure... and definitely the epitome of depravity.

  5. I read it years ago but don't remember it well.

  6. Not ringing any bells but I'd say Gen. Z is not unlike many people today. Lots of things are done for sport these days.

  7. I don't think I've ever heard about this guy before, but he sounds like an excellent villain. ;-)

  10. The way you describe him, he sounds like Hannibal Lecter. :) Dr. Lecter thought he was an affable host, too. Even knew what wines paired with what body part. :)

Love your posts. And thank you for going to "E" the other day. And thank you for stopping by my blog. <3

  11. Never read it but sounds like the author created a really nasty (or good) antagonist!

  12. Haven't read this one, but am loving your theme and excited to read about all the other YA characters you decide to write about. I'm doing my A-Z theme on character types and personality matching. I'm also your newest follower!

  13. Yep. That was one of the most influential short stories I've ever read, and I first read it in middle school.
